Already having made it's way through the Arizona House and Senate, the burden now falls on Arizona Governor Jan Brewer to either veto amendment SB1062 or to let it pass and face the consequences. Amendment SB1062 would allow business owners to extend business owner's rights to allow or deny service to gay or lesbian customers so long as the business owner is acting within their own religious belief. This would apply to any additional customers that do not adhere to the business owner's religious preferences.
The NFL is watching this situation closely and has hinted at potentially revoking the state from hosting next year's Super Bowl if this amendment is passed. Come on, Arizona. The state has already had one Super Bowl taken away from them because they voted on not recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. day in 1993....really? With the recent coming out of Michael Sam garnering such positive support and Jason Collins becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in a professional game, this move by Arizona seems untimely and against the trend towards more openness in professional sports.
Having the country's biggest sporting hosted in your state is a privilege and an opportunity that does not come around all that often. If this amendment is passed and the Super Bowl is in fact taken away from Arizona, it will be an embarrassment to the state.
Brewer has until this Friday, Feb. 28th, to take action and veto the bill, or do nothing and allow it to take place.
